Light Bowgun Guide
Light Bowgun turns mobility into firing time. Start with a primary ammo before choosing a gun, then tune its recoil, reload, and magazine to the firing rhythm the hunt will allow. In the fight, track which ammo is loaded, whether the target is inside its effective range, and how long recoil or reload will leave you exposed; keep moving with the reticle on a weak part, and stop firing before the monster's next action closes the opening.
Ammo marked for Rapid Fire turns one round into a burst, while other ammo fires once per input. This guide explains both loops. Wyvernblast adds mines that the hunter or monster can trigger. In either loop, stay inside the effective range shown by the reticle; ranged attacks lose damage outside their effective range.
This guide covers Sunbreak's final balance. Use the in-game Hunter's Notes for the complete weapon controls; the official manual lists the basics. Combat Mechanics explains why the same shot can deal different amounts of damage.
If this weapon is new to you, try it in the Training Area first. Use the in-game Hunter's Notes to practice its basic attacks; this guide explains how to connect them into a hunt.
Ammo is the weapon
The chosen ammo determines which gun and skills the build needs.
Bowgun handling depends on recoil and reload, and the Equipment Info screen lists both for each ammo on the equipped gun. Improve them for the ammo you actually fire, checking after each skill level whether that ammo's displayed value changes. High recoil lengthens the post-shot delay, while some reload ratings prevent the hunter from moving during the reload. Solve whichever delay keeps you from firing or evading during real openings before adding damage that assumes a shot can be taken safely. increases magazine capacity. sometimes prevents a shot from consuming its round.
Sticky explosions cannot crit, but they benefit from . Elemental ammo should target the monster's elemental hitzones. Normal, Pierce, and Spread ammo benefit from affinity and their matching shot-type skill: , , or , respectively.
There is no sharpness gauge.
Rapid Fire
Rapid Fire consumes one round to produce multiple hits; those hits are not separate full-power rounds. The burst commits to the direction of its first shot, so begin it only when that line will remain on the intended monster part. only affects ammo marked for Rapid Fire. At Lv 3, it increases Rapid Fire damage by 20%.
If the part is about to leave that line, fire a normal shot or reposition instead of starting Rapid Fire. A burst that drifts onto a worse hitzone still spends the round and the recovery.
Wyvernblast
Wyvernblast is a mine that cannot crit. increases the mine's damage, but it does not increase Normal ammo damage. Plant the mine on a path the monster will cross. Attacks from the hunter or monster can trigger it, so place it where those triggers will not pull your aim away from the primary hitzone.
Wyvern Counter is an evasive Silkbind retreat: the shot's recoil sends the hunter away, and its explosion can neutralize some breath attacks when timed correctly. It consumes one Wirebug charge. Fanning Maneuver is a Silkbind slide that lets the hunter move to the monster's flank, fire while moving, and briefly raise Attack. It consumes one Wirebug charge and shares a Switch Skill slot with Wyvern Counter. Mech Silkbind Shot is another Switch Skill in a different slot. It loads temporary Ironsilk shots whose lodged silk makes follow-up attacks more likely to break the part or make the monster mountable. Critical Firepower is an alternate firing style that increases damage for compatible ammo while narrowing its effective range and raising recoil; it is not a Wirebug move. Check the chosen ammo's recoil again after equipping it. can extend the effective range, while improves an equipped bowgun mod and can strengthen a silencer used to control recoil.
When a monster can follow a knockdown with another attack, keep a Wirebug charge available for Wirefall. The first evade input after a shot performs the standard evade, and a second input performs the slide. Check the reticle after the slide because its distance can carry you outside effective range.
Fight loop
Let the opening set the number of shots. Ammo marked for Rapid Fire needs enough time to finish its burst on one monster part; ordinary-fire ammo can stop after a single shot. Evade when an attack or a range correction demands it rather than after every shot. Reload when the opening is long enough for the chosen ammo's reload, and use a shorter opening to reposition. Plant Wyvernblast where the monster's movement or your next attack can trigger it without abandoning the intended hitzone.
Use Wyvern Counter to retreat from an incoming attack, or time its explosion against a compatible breath attack. If Fanning Maneuver is equipped on the current scroll, use its slide when the new angle keeps the chosen ammo in effective range; firing during the slide also uses its brief Attack increase.
At the start of the training hunt, target Great Izuchi's head, which has a shot hitzone value of 75. With Pierce, choose an angle that keeps the projectile inside the monster for multiple hits. With Spread, move close enough for its pellets to remain effective, then leave before that range becomes unsafe.
When the monster is down, use the ammo and hitzone that reward the length of the opening. A long body gives Pierce room for multiple hits; a nearby weak part lets Normal or Spread concentrate their hits. Reload before the monster rises only when the reload will finish in time.
When an attack threatens, evade with a roll, use the slide after a shot, or use Wyvern Counter to retreat if it is equipped. Light Bowgun has no shield or guard stance. After a knockdown, use Wirefall when immediate recovery is safer than remaining on the ground.
Skills
Survivability starts outside the weapon-specific build. Eat a meal, upgrade armor with Armor Sphere, and collect Spiribirds until the equipped Petalace reaches the stats the hunt requires. See Getting Started for those basics. Combat Mechanics explains and critical distance.
Core
Start with the chosen ammo's handling, then add skills that affect that ammo. Rapid-fire, ordinary-fire, physical, elemental, Sticky, and status builds do not share one universal damage priority.
| Offensive | Why |
|---|---|
| Lowers recoil for the chosen ammo. Check Equipment Info after each level and stop when another level no longer changes that ammo or the remaining delay already fits the hunt's openings. | |
| Shortens reload for the chosen ammo. Prioritize it when the current reload prevents movement or does not fit the openings you intend to use. | |
| Raises damage for ammo marked with Rapid Fire; Lv 3 adds 20%. Skip it when the gun does not use marked ammo. | |
| Increases magazine capacity for compatible ammo, reducing how often the firing loop stops for a reload. | |
| Gives each shot a chance not to consume its round, extending both the magazine and the carried ammo supply. | |
| Matching , , or | Raises the damage of the physical ammo type the build actually fires. It does not improve the other shot types. |
| Lv 3 | Adds 50% affinity to direct physical hits on parts with a physical shot hitzone value of 45 or higher. Sticky explosions do not use it. |
| and | Direct physical shots can crit. Add affinity when the chosen hitzone can use it, then add only when the build produces enough critical hits to benefit. Sticky explosions cannot crit. |
| Raises Attack and affinity only while the monster is enraged. Add it after the chosen ammo's handling and type-specific skills are working. |
There is no sharpness gauge. Do not gem .
| Defensive | Why |
|---|---|
| Eat every hunt | Raises maximum health and stamina for the quest; Dango adds its own skills. |
| Spiribirds | Raise quest stats up to the corresponding limits of the equipped Petalace. Collect the colors that address the hunt's risk. |
| Armor Sphere | Raises Defense at the smithy. Spend them on armor you expect to keep when hits start to hurt. |
| 20 matching resistance | Prevents the corresponding blight. Reach the threshold with , , , , or , as appropriate. |
| Has a chance to reduce damage if you are hit while shooting, reloading, or sliding. | |
| Lv 3 | Prevents stun from taking away the chance to evade the next hit. |
Add in a group when attacks from hunters are causing damage reactions. It has no teammate interactions to prevent during a solo hunt.
The following skills are often added but are not required:
| Skill | Why |
|---|---|
| Raises Wyvernblast damage. It does not increase Normal, Pierce, Spread, or Sticky ammo. | |
| Widens the critical-distance band for compatible ammo. It does not improve the monster's shot hitzone. | |
| Improves the equipped bowgun mod. It enhances the silencer used to control Critical Firepower. | |
| Lv 2 improves Wirefall recovery, while Lv 3 also speeds passive Wirebug recovery on the ground. Its value depends on how often the hunt uses Wyvern Counter, Fanning Maneuver, or Wirefall. | |
| Adds Attack, but does not change recoil, reload, capacity, or effective range. Add it after the chosen ammo can use its openings. | |
| Adds physical damage at full health. Any damage that has not been healed turns it off. | |
| Raises damage for a short time after you recover from a blight or abnormal status. | |
| After attacks fill its gauge, one attack that would knock the hunter back instead has its damage reduced and its damage reaction negated. Lv 2 reduces that damage further and causes an explosion. | |
| Increases part damage so breakable or severable parts reach their thresholds sooner. It does not add damage to the monster's health. | |
| Raises Attack and Defense after a faint. It can recover a troubled hunt, but is not a reason to plan a faint. |
Comfort
| Skill | Why |
|---|---|
| Increases the amount of health restored by potions and other healing effects. | |
| Shortens the time spent drinking after you sheathe. | |
| Makes the red, recoverable portion of the health bar regenerate faster. | |
| Adds Defense after armor has already been upgraded with Armor Sphere. | |
| Lv 3 | Prevents elemental blights when the matching elemental resistance cannot reach 20. Lower levels shorten blight duration instead of preventing it. |
| Lets you survive one qualifying lethal hit. The next hit can still make you faint. | |
| Extends roll invulnerability. It does not shorten recoil or reload. | |
| Extends rolls and the post-shot slide, but can carry the hunter out of the critical-distance range. | |
| At sufficient levels, prevents the corresponding roar strength from interrupting a Rapid Fire burst. Choose it when firing through those roars is worth the required skill levels. | |
| Reduces the stamina cost of rolls and the post-shot slide. It does not improve bowgun handling or recover Wirebugs. | |
| Sometimes lets you consume an item without removing it from the pouch. | |
| Grants a random Spiribird effect at fixed intervals in quests where the skill can activate. It does not guarantee the stat needed next. | |
| While a large monster is enraged, its levels progressively resist roars, wind pressure, and tremors while also adding Defense. Match the level to the interruption the monster causes. |
Styles
| Style | Skills |
|---|---|
| Sticky | Uses because Sticky explosions cannot crit. reaches a stun sooner but does not increase explosion damage. |
| Elemental ammo | Builds the matching elemental attack and targets elemental hitzones rather than shot hitzones. Add only when the chosen ammo uses Rapid Fire. |
| Critical Firepower | Raises damage for compatible ammo while narrowing its effective range and increasing recoil. Recheck the chosen ammo in Equipment Info. extends effective range, and can strengthen an equipped silencer; add them only when they solve the resulting range or recoil problem. |
| Fanning Maneuver | Raises Attack briefly and allows firing during the slide. It replaces Wyvern Counter, so the scroll gives up that counter. |
| Status ammo | Uses the matching status-attack skill when the hunt benefits from that status. Higher-level status ammo can have worse recoil or reload breakpoints. |
| Afflicted | changes the effects of Frenzy and grants benefits after the hunter overcomes it. adds Attack and affinity only while the monster is affected by poison, paralysis, or an elemental blight, so use it only when the build or hunting party can maintain that condition. |
This hunt
The hunt-specific skills below do not belong on every set. Against the right monster, they can matter more than a lower-priority damage skill.
| Skill | When |
|---|---|
| At a level matched to the wind pressure, prevents it from interrupting a burst or pushing the hunter out of effective range. | |
| At a level matched to the tremor, prevents it from wasting a firing opening and leaving the hunter in the wrong distance band. | |
| Raises Attack while the hunter has an abnormal status. Use it only when the hunt or build keeps that condition active long enough to justify the slots. | |
| Raises explosive-item damage. Use it when barrel bombs are part of the plan, such as a coordinated wake-up. It does not raise Sticky Ammo or Wyvernblast damage. | |
| Lv 2 | Negates the movement penalty from monster muck or deep snow so the hunter can return to effective range. Lv 1 only reduces the penalty. |
| Grants hellfire resistance and, after its conditions are met, adds explosive hellfire to the hunter's attacks. Use it only as part of a build designed around that condition. | |
| Lv 2 | A well-timed Switch Skill Swap negates the incoming damage, performs a backward Swap Evade, and recovers Wirebug gauge. Lv 1 does not provide the same recovery effect. |
A hunt can also make , , , , or more important than filling a remaining slot with a lower-priority damage skill.
Skills that look better than they are
- Do not prioritize a bigger Attack number on a gun that cannot handle the chosen ammo.
- Skip when the gun has no ammo marked for Rapid Fire.
- does not improve Sticky explosions because they cannot crit.
- Do not treat Rapid Fire as three full-strength shots.
- does not improve a hitzone; it only widens the distance band.
- does not increase Normal ammo damage.
- does not activate after the bowgun's evasive slide because the skill requires a terrain slide.
- does not give Light Bowgun a shield.
- activates only after stamina remains full for a period. Frequent rolls and slides make that affinity unreliable.
- Do not spend the last Wirebug charge on Wyvern Counter when the monster can knock you down and threaten a follow-up before a charge returns.
- improves Wyvern Riding rather than the damage of the chosen ammo. Mech Silkbind Shot can help make a monster mountable, but that does not turn into a firing skill.
- and depend on the monster targeting the hunter. Use either only when the build has a plan for the extra attention and the shorter firing windows it can create.
Settings
Arrange ammo in the desired order on the item bar. Do not craft an ammo type when its carried stack is already full, because rounds beyond the carrying limit are wasted. Add the primary ammo's crafting recipe to the radial menu and craft before its supply reaches zero. Keep the reticle on the monster part you intend to hit.
