Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak Guides
Progression, combat mechanics, and weapon knowledge for Monster Hunter Rise and Sunbreak.
General
Getting Started in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
A first hunt in Rise becomes clearer when you track the monster's next action and the route around it. That view guides when to attack or spend a Wirebug charge. Choose one of 14 weapon types, prepare for the target's specific needs, and collect Spiribirds while traveling from camp to the fight; together, those decisions produce a cleaner hunt.
Combat in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
Every exchange in Rise turns on three constraints: how long the monster is open, which part your next move can reach, and what will remain after spending a Wirebug charge. Fit the move to the opening and aim for a strong hitzone for its damage type, but keep a charge when you expect to need Wirefall. Balancing those decisions makes the opening more productive without spending the time or mobility needed for the monster's reply.
Weapons
Great Sword Guide
Great Sword begins with a wager: where will the monster be when the blade lands? The opening then determines a full release, an early release, a Tackle, or a Strongarm Stance counter. When the read is right, that prediction becomes one deliberate hit.
Long Sword Guide
With Long Sword, the monster's next attack matters more than the next step of your combo. Read when that attack will arrive and whether the moment is a safe counter or a true damage opening, then turn the correct answer into higher spirit levels. Use Iai Spirit Slash or Foresight Slash to take the turn, reach red, and spend one level on Spirit Helm Breaker only when the target will stay in place.
Sword and Shield Guide
Sword and Shield always has an answer. At close range, whether the monster is about to attack and how long it will stay still shape every short opening. The read determines whether you keep cutting, meet the attack with a counter, step through it, or commit to Perfect Rush. The answer may be sword hits for element, shield hits for stun, or an item used without first putting the weapon away.
Dual Blades Guide
Dual Blades thrive beside the monster, where every evade matters. Choose one reachable body part that is weak to your chosen element. When stamina and Wirebugs can keep you beside it, turn the opening into a rush of closely spaced hits. Demon dodge and Shrouded Vault let you evade without surrendering your position, but the weapon has no shield when your timing fails.
Hammer Guide
Hammer chases the next clean hit on the head. Accurate blunt hits turn into knockouts and longer punish windows, but only when the commitment fits the time available. Charge while moving, release a quick attack when the head will not stay put, and commit to a longer sequence only when the opening will last.
Hunting Horn Guide
Hunting Horn plays support in the heart of the fight. Track the monster's head and openings, the melodies available on your horn, and the gauge for Infernal Melody. When the opening is long enough for a performance or finisher, the same long-reaching blunt swings used to pressure the head become buffs for you and nearby allies: attack, refresh the melody that matters, and commit to the larger payoff only when the monster gives you time.
Lance Guide
Lance does not give ground. Keep its point aligned with one vulnerable part while you watch the monster. Between thrusts, judge whether the next opening is long enough to continue, whether an incoming hit calls for a guard or counter, or whether a guarded advance will preserve your aim. Those defensive decisions become uninterrupted offense inside the monster's reach.
Gunlance Guide
Gunlance is patience with an explosive answer. Read the monster's commitment alongside loaded shells, sharpness, and Wirebugs, then use each opening to hold the shield, move to stay close, or spend the magazine on a shelling route that fits the weapon. Defense and repositioning feed the next explosion rather than interrupting the attack. This chapter builds that rhythm through Normal shelling and its slam into Burst Fire.
Switch Axe Guide
Switch Axe carries momentum through every transformation. Axe form offers reach and restores the Switch Gauge that Sword form consumes; Sword hits build the Amp Gauge, while morph attacks connect the forms without ending your offense. Move and recover in Axe form, spend gauge in Sword form, or ready a counter, turning well-timed morphs into a run of phial bursts. In Sunbreak, a successful Elemental Burst Counter skips that buildup and puts the weapon directly into Amped State.
Charge Blade Guide
Charge Blade is a weapon of preparation and release. Track the sword-energy gauge, the shield charge, and the length of the monster's next opening. Store sword energy before overcharge makes sword attacks bounce, then match the opening to sustained Condensed Spinning Slash contact or a committed Axe: Ultra Element Discharge. The resulting axe payoff is either a saw that stays on one part or a discharge that lands while the monster cannot move away.
Insect Glaive Guide
Insect Glaive is a partnership between hunter and the Kinsect. Every approach starts with extract control: which body part gives each extract and when those buffs will expire. Precise aim then flows into either a grounded combo or an aerial approach as the next opening allows. Red extract unlocks the glaive's stronger attack patterns, while white and orange improve mobility and protection from knockback.
Light Bowgun Guide
Light Bowgun turns mobility into firing time. Start with a primary ammo before choosing a gun, then tune its recoil, reload, and magazine to the firing rhythm the hunt will allow. In the fight, track which ammo is loaded, whether the target is inside its effective range, and how long recoil or reload will leave you exposed; keep moving with the reticle on a weak part, and stop firing before the monster's next action closes the opening.
Heavy Bowgun Guide
Heavy Bowgun wins by choosing where to stand before it fires. Its long actions demand an early read. Track the loaded ammunition's effective range and how long the monster will remain open, then judge whether there is time to shoot, reload, guard, or roll. Build the bowgun around one main ammunition type and the recoil, reload speed, and capacity that make it practical.
Bow Guide
Bow is a rhythm of aim, movement, and restraint. The part under the reticle, its effective range, and the stamina left for the next evade shape every shot. From there, build and preserve charge, match a supported coating to the opening, and continue the string only while it is safe. The rhythm stays quick: aim, step around an attack, and return a charged arrow to the same vulnerable part.
