Heavy Bowgun Guide

Heavy Bowgun wins by choosing where to stand before it fires. Its long actions demand an early read. Track the loaded ammunition's effective range and how long the monster will remain open, then judge whether there is time to shoot, reload, guard, or roll. Build the bowgun around one main ammunition type and the recoil, reload speed, and capacity that make it practical.

A shield mod automatically guards attacks from the front while the hunter is standing still. Finish shooting or reloading before the attack arrives so the shield is ready; otherwise, leave time for the Heavy Bowgun's forward roll. Wyvernheart and Wyvernsnipe are the weapon's special ammo, while Crouching Shot exchanges movement for a firing rate that accelerates toward an overheat limit.

Sunbreak, final balance. Button inputs are in the official manual. Combat Mechanics explains why the same shot can deal different amounts of damage. Data for every move is in Motion Values.

If this weapon is new to you, try it in the Training Area first. Use the in-game Hunter's Notes to practice its basic attacks; this guide explains how to connect them into a hunt.

Ammo, shield, charge

Ammunition remains the foundation of the weapon. Choose Normal, Pierce, Spread, Sticky, or elemental ammunition as the build's main damage source, then choose a gun whose recoil, reload speed, and magazine capacity let it use that ammunition effectively. increases magazine capacity, while sometimes prevents a shot from consuming ammunition.

The shield mod automatically guards attacks from the front while the hunter is standing still. It is not ready during a shot or reload, so stop acting before the attack arrives. reduces knockback and stamina depletion when the shield blocks.

Charged shots take time to prepare. shortens that wait, but the skill provides no benefit when the firing loop never charges shots.

There is no sharpness gauge.

Special ammo and Crouching Shot

Load Wyvernheart or Wyvernsnipe when the monster offers enough time to commit to special ammunition. raises the damage of both special-ammo types, but it does not raise Normal, Pierce, Spread, or Sticky ammo damage.

Crouching Shot holds the hunter in place and fires directly from the carried ammunition supply. Its firing interval becomes shorter as the burst continues. Stop before the gauge reaches its limit because an overheated bowgun cannot fire again until it cools.

Setting Sun slows ammunition that passes through its ring and increases the number of hits from compatible piercing and multi-hit ammunition. Position the ring so those shots can continue through a long section of the monster. Rising Moon instead speeds up compatible ammunition and extends its range. The two fields occupy different Switch Skill slots, so choosing one does not exclude the other. Each costs one Wirebug; keep a Wirebug available for Wirefall when a failed firing commitment could leave the hunter on the ground.

Fight loop

For ammunition that uses critical distance, begin each attack from its effective range. Fire only while the opening remains safe, then stop before the next attack so the shield can guard or there is time to roll. Reload after the attack has passed and the monster leaves enough time, because the shield cannot guard during the reload. A successful block can preserve the firing lane, but its knockback may shorten the next opening.

Use special ammunition only during an opening long enough for its loading and firing commitment. Place Setting Sun or Rising Moon in a firing lane the hunter can maintain. Stop firing before a roar if the shield will be needed to block it. Use Crouching Shot when the monster will remain open long enough for the accelerating burst, and leave the stance before the gauge overheats.

At the start of a hunt against Great Izuchi, the head has a shot hitzone value of 75. Set up at the effective range of the selected ammunition. If the opening and Wirebug supply allow it, place Setting Sun or Rising Moon in the planned firing lane.

When the monster is down, use the longer opening for a full magazine, Crouching Shot, or loaded special ammunition, depending on the build. End the attack early enough to reload or reposition before the monster can retaliate.

To disengage defensively, rely on the shield between shots or the forward roll. Wirefall is the recovery option after being knocked down.

Skills

When hits start to hurt, eat before the hunt, upgrade armor with Armor Sphere, and collect Spiribirds until you reach the limit of the equipped Petalace. See Getting Started. Combat Mechanics covers and critical distance.

Handling and damage

A Normal, Pierce, or Spread plan starts by making its selected ammunition safe and efficient to fire.

Handling and damage
OffensiveWhy
Lowers recoil for the chosen ammo until the hunter can move after firing and the shield can rise without a lengthy recovery. Stop when the next level no longer improves that ammo.
Shortens the reload for the chosen ammo. Reach the required reload breakpoint before adding damage skills whose benefits cannot be used safely.
Increases magazine capacity for compatible ammo, reducing how often a reload leaves the shield unavailable.
Gives each shot a chance not to consume ammunition, extending the effective life of the magazine and the carried supply.
Matching , , or Raises the damage of the physical ammo type the build actually fires. It does not improve the other shot types.
Lv 3Adds 50% affinity when an attack hits a monster weak spot. Use it when the chosen ammunition can repeatedly reach those parts.
and raises affinity, while raises critical-hit damage. Add them after the gun can handle its main ammunition, and judge their value from how often that ammunition can land critical hits.
Raises Attack and affinity while the monster is enraged, strengthening direct shots after recoil, reload, and other handling requirements are solved.

Handling and damage
DefensiveWhy
Eat before every huntEating raises maximum health and stamina for the quest, while Dango provides additional skills. The extra margin helps when a long shot or reload is punished.
SpiribirdsCollect them to raise maximum quest health up to the limit of the equipped Petalace.
Armor SphereSpend Armor Spheres at the smithy to raise the Defense of armor you expect to keep when hits start to hurt.
Match resistance to the huntUse , , , , or when the corresponding elemental damage or blight is causing trouble.
Has a chance to reduce damage when the hunter is caught during a shot, reload, or slow roll.
Lv 3Prevents a stun that can leave the hunter exposed long enough for the next hit to cause a faint.

Add in multiplayer, but skip it when hunting solo. Long projectile paths can intersect teammates, so keep the firing lane clear.

The following skills support particular weapons or firing plans rather than every build:

Handling and damage
SkillWhy
Reduces shield knockback when the bowgun has a shield mod and the hunter is facing the incoming attack between shots. Match the level to the monster.
Lets the shield block certain attacks that are normally unblockable. The shield is still unavailable during a shot or reload.
Raises Wyvernheart and Wyvernsnipe damage. It does not increase Normal, Pierce, Spread, or Sticky ammo.
Shortens charged-shot preparation. Skip it when the firing loop never charges shots.
Widens the critical-distance band for compatible ammo. It does not improve the monster's shot hitzone.
Lv 3Increases passive Wirebug recovery while the hunter is on the ground, making the gauges spent on Setting Sun and Rising Moon available sooner. Lv 2 also increases Wirefall recovery rate.
Lv 4+Adds Attack after recoil, reload, capacity, and shot-type skills are covered. It cannot make ammunition with unusable handling practical.
Adds physical damage at full health. Shield chip damage or any unrecovered hit turns it off.
Adds affinity after stamina has remained full for a period of time. A stationary firing loop can maintain it, but stamina spent on a roll interrupts that condition.
Raises damage for a short time after you recover from a blight or abnormal status.
After its gauge fills through repeated attacks, it prevents the damage reaction and reduces the damage from one attack that would cause knockback. This can keep one firing or reload animation from being interrupted.
Increases part damage, making breaks and severs easier. It does not increase damage to the monster's health.
Raises Attack and Defense after a faint. It can recover a troubled hunt, but is not a reason to plan a faint.

Survival and mobility

These skills reduce the cost of being caught during the Heavy Bowgun's long shots, reloads, and evasions.

Survival and mobility
SkillWhy
Increases the health restored by potions and other healing effects.
Shortens the time spent drinking after you sheathe.
Makes the red portion of the health bar recover faster.
Adds Defense after armor has already been upgraded with Armor Sphere.
Lv 3Nullifies all elemental blights. Use it when several elements are relevant or matching resistance skills do not fit the set.
Allows the hunter to survive one qualifying lethal hit. The next hit can still cause a faint.
At a level that matches the roar, prevents or reduces its effect so it cannot interrupt a shot. A shield can already block some roars when the hunter stops acting and faces the monster, so choose this skill when firing through them matters.
Extends evasions, but the extra distance can carry the hunter out of the ammunition's effective range.
Reduces the stamina cost of evasions. It does not improve bowgun handling or recover Wirebugs.
Sometimes lets you use an item without removing it from the pouch.
Grants the effect of a random Spiribird at fixed intervals in quests where the skill functions. It supplements deliberate collection rather than guaranteeing a particular bird.
Resists roars, wind, and tremors while a large monster is enraged.

StyleSkills
Sticky raises Sticky Ammo damage. raises stun power instead, so use it when reaching a stun sooner is part of the firing plan.
Elemental ammoRaise the matching elemental attack, then add when the hitzone qualifies. With piercing elemental ammo, use Setting Sun to produce more hits while the projectile remains inside the monster.
Crouching ShotLeave the stance before the weapon overheats. affects charged shots, so it is not the first skill to prioritize for this firing loop.
ShieldEquip a shield mod and , then stop firing before an attack so the shield can rise. Add when the monster targets the hunter; at Lv 3 it adds Defense and reduces guard knockback.
AfflictedUse for its benefits after clearing Frenzy. Use only when the build reliably applies poison, paralysis, or an elemental blight.

This hunt

These skills belong only on sets for a matching monster or condition. Use them when that condition repeatedly interrupts the chosen firing plan.

This hunt
SkillWhen
Use it when the firing plan relies on the shield against an attack that is normally unblockable. It does not make the shield available during a shot or reload.
At a level that matches the wind pressure, prevents or reduces its effect so it cannot interrupt the firing plan.
At a level that matches the tremor, prevents or reduces its effect so the hunter can use the opening to fire or reload.
Raises Attack while the hunter is suffering from an abnormal status. Use it when the hunt or build makes that condition frequent enough to plan around.
Reduces or negates the mobility penalty from monster muck and deep snow, helping the hunter return to the planned firing range.
Reduces hellfire damage at Lv 1. At higher levels it changes hellfire's damage or applies hellfireblight while the monster is enraged, so include it only when the build plans around those effects.
Lv 2A well-timed Switch Skill Swap nullifies the incoming hit, performs a backward Swap Evade, and recovers Wirebug gauge. Use it when the firing plan can reliably reserve the timing for the swap.
Improves defense and guard strength while the monster targets the hunter, helping the shield preserve the firing position.

A hunt can also make , , , , or more important than another damage skill competing for the remaining slot.

Settings

Order the ammo list so the rounds the build actually fires are easy to reach. Do not craft ammunition while its carried stack is already full. Configure the radial menu to craft only the ammunition the build uses, and restock before the carried supply is exhausted. Adjust aiming sensitivity so the reticle can stay on the target part throughout a firing opening.
