Dual Blades Guide
Dual Blades thrive beside the monster, where every evade matters. Choose one reachable body part that is weak to your chosen element. When stamina and Wirebugs can keep you beside it, turn the opening into a rush of closely spaced hits. Demon dodge and Shrouded Vault let you evade without surrendering your position, but the weapon has no shield when your timing fails.
Each hit has separate physical and elemental portions, and the move data gives many Dual Blades attacks an elemental modifier. A matching element therefore rewards repeated contact with an elementally weak part, but the best target still depends on both its sever and elemental hitzones. The other decision is commitment: Blade Dance (Demon Mode) cannot be canceled once it begins, so save it for an opening long enough to finish the animation.
This guide covers Sunbreak at its final balance. The controls are in the official manual. Combat Mechanics explains why the same attack can deal different amounts of damage. The complete move list is in Motion Values.
If this weapon is new to you, try it in the Training Area first. Use the in-game Hunter's Notes to practice its basic attacks; this guide explains how to connect them into a hunt.
Demon and Archdemon
Demon Mode changes your available moves and continuously drains stamina. Only attacks that hit the monster while Demon Mode is active fill the Demon Gauge. Exit the mode to stop the stamina drain. The standard Demon Mode increases elemental damage, while Feral Demon Mode favors physical damage and adds slashing attacks to its dodges. Choose between them from the build and the hitzones you intend to attack rather than from hit count alone.
Archdemon Mode consumes portions of that stored gauge to perform enhanced attacks outside Demon Mode. It does not multiply every hit. makes the stored gauge last longer.
slows the continuous stamina drain. reduces the fixed stamina cost of the dodge itself. restores stamina faster. These skills do not have the same effect.
Demon dodge is the roll available in Demon and Archdemon modes. Its short dash lets you evade or reposition while remaining close. Fill the gauge in Demon Mode, then exit the mode and use Archdemon attacks to keep cutting without the continuous stamina drain.
Feral Demon Mode attacks as you enter the mode. The continuous stamina drain remains, and its dodge also deals damage. It becomes more attractive when the chosen body part has a poor elemental hitzone and your weapon favors physical damage.
Blade Dance
Sixfold Demon Slash is a staged combo, so you can stop before entering its next attack. Blade Dance is different: once it begins, its full animation commits you in place. Use shorter attacks while the monster can move, then start the dance only when an opening such as a knockdown will last long enough.
In Sunbreak, Spiral Slash is the main offensive use of a Wirebug. It costs one Wirebug. It attaches only to a monster body part with a physical hitzone of 45 or higher. If it fails to attach, you slide off and still consume the Wirebug. Its repeated hits use the move's elemental modifier, so compare the part's elemental hitzone as well as meeting the attachment threshold. Use it from the ground, or use Demon Flight followed by Spiral Slash while airborne. Continue attacking the same body part after the dive ends.
Piercing Bind records your hits and then produces a delayed burst. Most of its damage comes from the delayed burst rather than the initial hit. Equip it on the second Scroll, access it with Switch Skill Swap, and use it during a monster knockdown.
Demon Flight and Shrouded Vault
Demon Flight vaults you into the air when its opening attack connects, giving you access to aerial follow-ups. Follow it with Spiral Slash when the part you want to hit meets Spiral Slash's attachment requirement.
Shrouded Vault is a Silkbind counter that costs one Wirebug. Time the counter so that it meets an incoming attack. Before spending another Wirebug, decide whether the monster can knock you down before one recovers for Wirefall.
Ironshine Silk applies a coating effect to the blades and costs one Wirebug. While the effect is active, a correctly timed evade through an attack restores sharpness. This effect helps you remain close to the target body part longer between whetstone uses, but it does not remove every need to sharpen. It replaces Shrouded Vault, so you cannot equip both on the same Scroll. Activate the coating, then swap to the Scroll that carries the counter.
Left Slide Slash attacks while moving sideways and can evade an attack when timed correctly. Use it within a combo when lateral movement preserves your position; use Demon dodge when you need a direct evasive input.
Switch Skills
You have two Scrolls, and each slot can contain one choice. The important pairings are determined by purpose:
| Slot | Direct offense | Alternative purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Silkbind | Spiral Slash drills into a qualifying part | Piercing Bind rewards landing more hits before its delayed burst |
| Defense or upkeep | Shrouded Vault counters an incoming attack | Ironshine Silk lets a well-timed evade restore sharpness while its effect lasts |
Switch Skill Swap lets the second Scroll carry Piercing Bind or Ironshine Silk, then lets you swap back to Spiral Slash and Shrouded Vault. Using both Scrolls this way is optional. Use Piercing Bind when the monster will remain in range for the stake and your follow-up hits, or activate Ironshine Silk when sharpness needs support. Swap only when the change is worth interrupting your attacks.
Fight loop
Choose a reachable part with favorable sever and elemental hitzones, enter Demon Mode beside it, and use attacks that let you respond while the monster is mobile. Counter a readable attack with Shrouded Vault, or dodge and reposition before resuming. Use Spiral Slash only on a body part with a physical hitzone of 45 or higher; after it attaches, continue attacking whichever favorable part you can safely reach. If the active Scroll carries Ironshine Silk, activate the coating before you need sharpness and restore sharpness with a correctly timed evade while the effect lasts. Attacks that connect during Demon Mode fill the Demon gauge.
Start Blade Dance only when the monster will remain still long enough for the complete animation. Exit Demon Mode before stamina reaches the point where you cannot evade, then use Archdemon attacks without the continuous drain while stamina recovers. Re-enter Demon Mode when the monster and your stamina permit another close-range sequence.
At the start of a hunt, confirm the body part and element you built for before committing to it. On Great Izuchi, for example, the head has a sever hitzone of 80 and a thunder hitzone of 25, so thunder Dual Blades can exploit both values there. Enter Demon Mode beside the head and use Spiral Slash only when spending its Wirebug will not remove a recovery option you expect to need.
During a knockdown, use Piercing Bind if its Scroll is active and enough of the opening remains to land the follow-up hits that feed its delayed burst. Otherwise, spend the opening on Blade Dance against the chosen body part. Preserve a Wirebug for Wirefall when the monster's next attack could knock you down before the gauge recovers.
The options for disengaging defensively are Demon dodge, Shrouded Vault, or exiting Demon Mode and moving away. Wirefall is the recovery option after you are knocked down.
Skills
When a monster's attacks begin to hurt, improve health and armor before adding more damage. Eat before the hunt, then collect Spiribirds until you reach the limit of the equipped Petalace. Getting Started explains meals, Spiribirds, and pouch preparation. Combat Mechanics explains Defense, the elemental blight threshold at 20 resistance, and . To activate , attack a body part whose sever hitzone is 45 or higher. A matching element matters only when that same part also has a useful hitzone for the element.
Core
Build for the body part you can keep hitting. Element skills strengthen the elemental portion, while affinity and Attack strengthen or enable bonuses for the physical portion.
| Offensive | Why |
|---|---|
| Weapon with a matching element, then the corresponding , , , , or | These skills raise only the element already present on the weapon, so match both the weapon and skill to the chosen body part's elemental weakness. |
| Demon Mode continuously drains stamina. | |
| Lv 3 | Adds 50% affinity when attacking a monster body part with a physical hitzone of 45 or higher — the body part you are already staying close to. |
| and other affinity sources, then and | Count conditional affinity such as before adding more. Physical critical hits gain damage from , elemental critical hits require , and affinity above 100% has no further effect. |
| Raises Attack and affinity while the monster is enraged. | |
| Maintain the planned sharpness color | Dropping to a lower color changes the sharpness multipliers applied to both physical and elemental damage. Choose one sustainable method from Keep a color. |
| Defensive | Why |
|---|---|
| Eat every hunt | Raises maximum health and stamina for the quest; Dango adds its own skills. |
| Spiribirds | Raise health during the quest up to the limit of the equipped Petalace. |
| Armor Sphere | Raises Defense at the smithy. Spend them on armor you expect to keep when hits start to hurt. |
| 20 resistance matching the monster's element | Prevents the corresponding elemental blight. Use , , , , or when armor and food do not reach that threshold. |
| Has a chance to reduce damage when a dodge or counter misses. | |
| Lv 3 | Prevents stun from leaving you exposed to the next attack while using a weapon with no guard. |
In multiplayer, prevents reactions between allies' attacks when those interruptions are a problem. It has no purpose in solo play.
Often added, not required:
| Skill | Why |
|---|---|
| Lv 4+ | Adds physical Attack. Lv 4 is the first level that adds a percentage bonus as well as a flat bonus. |
| Reduces fixed stamina costs such as those of Demon dodge and normal rolls. It does not slow the continuous stamina drain. | |
| Restores stamina faster after you leave the mode that continuously drains it. | |
| Extends the stored gauge that powers Archdemon Mode after you exit Demon Mode. | |
| Raises elemental damage when the target body part's elemental hitzone is at least 25. | |
| Consecutive hits trigger temporary physical and elemental bonuses, which suits attack sequences that maintain contact. | |
| Shortens Wirebug recovery time after Spiral Slash, Shrouded Vault, or Ironshine Silk. | |
| Adds physical damage at full health; taking damage disables it until that health is restored. | |
| Raises damage for a short time after you recover from a blight or abnormal status. | |
| Adds affinity after its condition is met, but is less controllable than . | |
| After its gauge fills through attacks, it can absorb the reaction from one incoming hit; damage is also reduced. This can protect a committed animation, but it must be charged again afterward. | |
| Breaks tails and horns faster. It does not increase damage to the monster's health. | |
| Raises Attack and Defense after a faint. It can recover a troubled hunt; it is not a reason to plan to faint. |
Keep a color
Pick one method. Attacks with Dual Blades consume sharpness quickly. becomes more effective as affinity rises. Ironshine Silk is the Switch Skill option for maintaining sharpness.
| Skill | What it does |
|---|---|
| Adds sharpness when the sharpness gauge is not already full. | |
| Gives critical hits a chance not to consume sharpness; the chance rises with skill level. | |
| Prevents sharpness loss for a fixed time after you sharpen. | |
| Reduces sharpness consumption on average. | |
| Provides a temporary boost after you restore the required number of lost sharpness levels. Hits during a combo do not restore sharpness. | |
| A correctly timed evade through an attack while the weapon is drawn restores sharpness. | |
| Lets you use a whetstone during a brief safe opportunity. |
Comfort
| Skill | Why |
|---|---|
| Increases the health restored by potions and other healing effects. | |
| Shortens the time spent drinking after you sheathe. | |
| The red portion of the health bar returns faster. | |
| Adds Defense after armor has already been upgraded with Armor Sphere. | |
| Shortens elemental blights at lower levels and prevents them at Lv 3 when resistance to the corresponding element cannot reach 20. | |
| Lets you survive one otherwise lethal hit when its health requirement is met. The next hit can still make you faint. | |
| Extends the duration of invulnerability during Demon dodge and normal rolls. | |
| Extends the distance of evasive slides, but the extra distance can carry you away from the target body part. | |
| At the level required for a monster's roar, prevents that roar from interrupting Blade Dance after you have started its long animation. | |
| Sometimes lets you consume an item without removing it from the pouch. | |
| Calls a random Spiribird at intervals, reducing the time spent collecting birds. | |
| At sufficient levels, resists roars, wind, and tremors while a large monster is enraged. |
Styles
| Style | Skills |
|---|---|
| Physical | Favor physical Attack and affinity when the parts you can reliably reach have poor elemental hitzones. This is a matchup decision, not a default for every monster. |
| Status | , , , or . The high hit count provides many chances to apply status. |
| Spiral Slash | Target a monster body part with a physical hitzone of 45 or higher and use to recover the Wirebug after repeated dives. |
| Afflicted | rewards clearing Frenzy. rewards reliably inflicting poison, paralysis, or an elemental blight with your build. |
| On the Blue Scroll, changes incoming damage into rapidly draining red health. uses that red health to provide offensive bonuses and, when its stronger condition is active, infinite stamina. That can sustain Demon Mode, but only while you manage the health drain and condition. |
This hunt
These skills answer specific attacks or hunt plans. Add one only when you can name the interruption or opportunity it changes.
| Skill | When |
|---|---|
| At the required level, prevents a tremor from interrupting Blade Dance while you are already close enough to attack. | |
| At the required level, prevents wind pressure from interrupting Blade Dance. | |
| Raises Attack throughout a blight, benefiting every hit of Blade Dance until the blight ends. | |
| Raises barrel-bomb damage against a sleeping monster. Blade Dance hits and wakes the monster too early in its sequence, so let the barrel bombs deliver the attack that wakes it. | |
| Makes the monster more likely to target you. Use it only when drawing attention helps the group's plan and you are prepared to evade the added attacks. | |
| Makes it easier to put a monster into a mountable state. Consider it only when Demon Flight and other aerial attacks support a deliberate Wyvern Riding plan. | |
| Prevents deep mud and snow from slowing your attack sequence while you stay close to the target body part. | |
| Creates hellfireblight while the monster is enraged at higher levels. Remove it with a Silkbind movement before committing to Blade Dance rather than letting it explode during the sequence. | |
| A correctly timed Switch Skill Swap evades an attack and, at Lv 2, recovers part of the Wirebug gauge. Use it when swapping Scrolls is already part of the hunt plan. | |
| Improves defense and evasion while the monster targets you, helping you survive while Demon Mode continues to drain stamina. |
A hunt can also make , , , , or more important than another offensive skill. Keep Dung Pods in the pouch and fire one when an unwanted large monster enters the fight.
Skills that look better than they are
- Do not use Spiral Slash on a monster body part whose physical hitzone is lower than 45. A failed attachment still consumes the Wirebug.
- Do not treat Feral Demon Mode as a direct upgrade to Demon Mode. Its physical bonus and dodge attacks replace the standard mode's stronger elemental focus, so compare them for the chosen part and build.
- Do not add to a and set while is already removing the stamina limit.
- does not fill Demon Gauge.
- does not reduce the stamina cost of rolls. That is the role of .
- Do not start Blade Dance against a standing monster that is about to turn.
- is a poor fit because Demon Mode drains stamina continuously, while the skill requires full stamina.
- does not give Dual Blades a shield.
- Before spending your final available Wirebug on Spiral Slash, decide whether the opening is safe enough to give up Wirefall until the gauge recovers.
- does not activate after Demon dodge because that dodge is not an environmental slide.
Settings
Set automatic sheathe to Manual so ordinary movement does not sheathe the blades while you are trying to stay ready beside the chosen body part.
While circling in Demon Mode, keep the camera high enough that the target part stays clear of the body. A camera that rides behind the flank after a sidestep hides whether the next spin still hits the head or has slipped to the shoulder.
