Switch Axe Guide

Switch Axe carries momentum through every transformation. Axe form offers reach and restores the Switch Gauge that Sword form consumes; Sword hits build the Amp Gauge, while morph attacks connect the forms without ending your offense. Move and recover in Axe form, spend gauge in Sword form, or ready a counter, turning well-timed morphs into a run of phial bursts. In Sunbreak, a successful Elemental Burst Counter skips that buildup and puts the weapon directly into Amped State.

You cannot hold a shield guard. Morphing, counters, and evasive movement are how you avoid attacks without sheathing. is the skill that strengthens morphing.

This guide covers Sunbreak after its final balance update. Use the in-game Hunter's Notes for weapon controls; the official manual covers common controls and weapon systems. Combat Mechanics explains why the same attack can deal different damage. Details for every move are in Motion Values.

If this weapon is new to you, try it in the Training Area first. Use the in-game Hunter's Notes to practice its basic attacks; this guide explains how to connect them into a hunt.

Gauge, Amped State, phial

The Switch Gauge recovers in Axe form and is consumed by morphing into Sword form and attacking there. If it falls below the marker, an attempted Sword morph becomes a slow reload instead of an attack, so morph back to Axe before reaching that point.

Sword attacks fill the Amp Gauge. When that gauge is full, you enter Amped State: weapon attacks that connect trigger phial bursts. A full Switch Gauge does not create Amped State. extends the duration of Amped State.

Phial type determines what Sword attacks and Amped phial bursts add to the weapon's damage. Choose the whole weapon for the target and build: match an element phial to an effective elemental hitzone, or use a power or exhaust phial when the weapon's other stats and your skills support it. Exhaust phial effects can build stun when they hit the head, but the weapon attacks themselves still deal severing damage. A successful Elemental Burst Counter enters Amped State regardless of phial type.

Morph and

Use Axe form to move, refill, and perform Axe: Heavy Slam. Use Sword form when you have enough gauge and can reach the target body part. Morphing Slash is the forward-moving attack that changes forms. Use its movement to leave the attack's path before impact; the morph has no guard or counter window of its own. Lv 3 speeds up morphing and increases morph-attack damage, so it rewards using morph attacks for both repositioning and offense.

Attempting to morph into Sword form with an empty Switch Gauge causes a reload instead of an attack. When the gauge is nearly empty, morph back to Axe form before that happens.

After Axe: Wild Swing, you can use the alternate morph sequence Axe: 2nd Morph Slash I (to Sword) → Sword: 2nd Morph Slash II (back to Axe). Sword attacks in this sequence gain power, while its Axe attacks restore the Switch Gauge faster. This sequence replaces Axe: Wide Sweep and lets one committed opening support both damage and gauge recovery.

Elemental Burst Counter

Elemental Burst Counter costs two Wirebugs. Entering its stance begins draining the Switch Gauge, so release the burst as the monster's attack reaches you. A successful counter delivers a heavy finisher and puts you in Amped State. Because the counter skips the usual Sword-form buildup, it can establish the Sunbreak Switch Axe loop at the start of a hunt.

Even an unsuccessful counter ends with an attack that resists knockback, but you still take damage. Because Elemental Burst costs two Wirebugs, committing both base charges also leaves Wirefall unavailable until one recovers.

Switch Skills

You have two scrolls, and each scroll holds one choice for every slot. Start with the choices below when you can read attacks early enough to ready Elemental Burst Counter; use Switch Charger instead while learning a target if steady gauge recovery is more useful than a two-Wirebug counter.

CounterElemental Burst CounterSwitch Charger
SilkbindWire StepInvincible Gambit or Soaring Wyvern Blade
FinisherZero Sum Discharge FinisherCompressed Finishing Discharge

Switch Charger restores the Switch Gauge and temporarily stops that gauge from depleting. It costs one Wirebug. Use it when the gauge is low and there is no incoming attack to counter.

Wire Step is a one-Wirebug evasion that flanks the monster and morphs the weapon into Axe form. Use its movement to leave an attack and continue from the monster's side. Invincible Gambit is a spinning charge with protection from knockback. Soaring Wyvern Blade is an aerial finisher. If its dive connects, it builds the gauge toward Amped State and triggers an explosion. After a full Zero Sum Discharge Finisher, the explosion launches you into the air: use Soaring Wyvern Blade from there if the dive is equipped on that scroll. Weigh that Wirebug cost against saving the charge for Wirefall.

You can equip Switch Charger or Soaring Wyvern Blade on the second scroll and use Switch Skill Swap to access it during a knockdown. Switch back to the scroll with the counter before the monster stands up.

Zero Sum Discharge

While Amped State is active, begin with Element Discharge against a large monster to attach and continue into Zero Sum Discharge Finisher. Press the attack input repeatedly to add hits and reach the full explosion. Tilting away instead produces the quicker, simplified explosion. Once attached, you move with the monster and resist knockback, but you still take damage, so reserve the full sequence for an opening long enough to finish. The explosion throws you backward. From the air, use Soaring Wyvern Blade if the dive is equipped on that scroll — the dive builds the gauge toward Amped State when it connects. After landing, morph to Axe form and refill the gauge. Compressed Finishing Discharge is the replacement that does not attach to the monster. It resists knockback during its strike and explosion, but Amped State does not change it.

Fight loop

Begin in Axe form and watch both the Switch Gauge and the monster. Morph to Sword when the gauge is above its marker and you can reach the chosen body part. Sword hits build Amped State; while it is active, keep attacks on that part to trigger phial bursts. Morph back to Axe before the Switch Gauge forces a reload. When a familiar attack gives you enough warning, ready Elemental Burst Counter and release its burst into the attack to enter Amped State immediately. If the timing or spacing is unclear, move out with an early morph or Wire Step instead.

Against Great Izuchi, the head has a sever hitzone value of 80. Approach in Axe form and use that clear target to practice the decision: counter a readable opening if both Wirebugs are available, or morph into Sword while attacking the head and build the Amp Gauge normally.

When the monster is down, use Sword attacks during Amped State, or use a full Zero Sum Discharge Finisher only if the remaining opening is long enough to complete it. After the explosion, use Soaring Wyvern Blade if the dive is equipped on that scroll. Then morph to Axe form and recover gauge before the monster stands. If its wake-up animation leads into a familiar attack, decide whether entering Amped State is worth spending both Wirebugs and temporarily losing Wirefall.

Use Elemental Burst Counter only when two Wirebugs are available and you can read the incoming attack's timing. Otherwise, morph out of its path before impact or use Wire Step when it is equipped. None can be held like a shield guard. Keep a Wirebug for Wirefall when being knocked down is the larger risk.

SkillWhy
Lv 4+Adds Attack after the weapon-specific needs above are covered. Lv 4 is the first level with a percentage bonus.
Improves Wirebug availability for the counter, movement Silkbinds, and Wirefall. This matters most when spending two charges on Elemental Burst Counter.
Adds a timed Attack bonus after a well-timed evade. Pair it with an evasion-focused approach rather than assuming every reposition will activate it.
Adds physical damage at full health; any damage that has not been healed turns it off.
Adds affinity at full stamina. Morphing does not consume stamina, but hops do.
Repeated hits build its temporary Attack and element bonuses, fitting sustained Sword and morph offense.
Raises damage for a short time after you recover from a blight or abnormal status.
Adds affinity after its activation condition is met; unlike , it is not tied to the body part you attack.
After its gauge fills through attacks, it can reduce the damage and reaction from one incoming attack.
Breaks tails and horns faster. It does not increase damage to the monster's health.
Raises Attack and Defense after a faint. It helps recover a troubled hunt; it is not a reason to plan a faint.

Maintain sharpness
SkillWhat it does
Adds sharpness when the sharpness gauge is not already full.
Prevents sharpness loss on critical hits.
Prevents sharpness loss for a fixed time after you sharpen.
Reduces sharpness loss on average.
Provides a timed boost after sharpening restores enough sharpness levels. Combo attacks do not restore sharpness.
Lets you use a whetstone during a brief safe opening.

Survivability and ease

Survivability and ease

Increases the health restored by potions and other healing effects.
Shortens the time spent drinking after you sheathe.
Restores the red portion of the health bar faster.
Adds Defense after armor has already been upgraded with Armor Sphere.
Lv 3Prevents blights when resistance to the matching element cannot reach 20.
Lets you survive one qualifying lethal attack. The next attack can still make you faint.
Prevents qualifying roars from interrupting an attack, including Zero Sum Discharge Finisher.
Extends hops and rolls. Choose a level that still leaves your follow-up morph in range of the targeted body part.
Reduces the stamina cost of hops and rolls. Morph attacks do not spend stamina.
Sometimes lets you consume an item without removing it from the pouch.
Calls a random Spiribird at intervals, reducing the time spent collecting birds.

Common misunderstandings

Settings

Set automatic sheathe to Manual if you want the weapon to stay drawn until you choose to sheathe; that keeps the Axe-to-Sword plan under your control while repositioning.

Before a long sword discharge, center the camera on the head or wound you mean to finish on. A camera left on the body after an axe approach often dumps the sword finish onto a weaker zone.
