Charge Blade Guide

Charge Blade is a weapon of preparation and release. Track the sword-energy gauge, the shield charge, and the length of the monster's next opening. Store sword energy before overcharge makes sword attacks bounce, then match the opening to sustained Condensed Spinning Slash contact or a committed Axe: Ultra Element Discharge. The resulting axe payoff is either a saw that stays on one part or a discharge that lands while the monster cannot move away.

This guide covers Sunbreak's final balance. Complete button inputs and recommended combos are in Weapon Controls in the in-game Hunter's Notes; the official manual lists Charge Blade's basic inputs. Combat Mechanics explains why the same attack deals different amounts of damage. Phials have their own rules. Every move is in Motion Values.

If this weapon is new to you, try it in the Training Area first. Use the in-game Hunter's Notes to practice its basic attacks; this guide explains how to connect them into a hunt.

Phials and charges

Sword attacks build energy. Once the gauge is yellow, Charge Phials stores that energy in phials. Continuing past red overcharges the sword, and sword attacks bounce until you store the energy. Charging the shield is a separate step: begin an Amped or Ultra Element Discharge and cancel it into Element Up Roundslash, which consumes the loaded phials. From the charged shield, you can enter charged sword. The charged shield also strengthens axe attacks and guarding, and it enables Axe: Ultra Element Discharge.

does not replace the overcharge mechanic; store the energy to stop the sword from bouncing. Lv 2 fills all five phials from a yellow gauge.

strengthens charge blade phial attacks. Saw contacts are weapon hits, so their target part, sharpness, and affinity still matter. When you use , its affinity applies only on raw hitzones of 45 or higher; 45 is that skill's activation threshold, not a universal rule for which part you must attack.

speeds the weapon's form changes, while reduces the amount of sword-mode energy needed to fill all five phials. The two skills serve different purposes.

Guard points and Ready Stance

A guard point is the blocking window inside a morph. Time the morph so that window meets the attack, then use the follow-up that the resulting knockback permits. A normal guard is a different action, but it can also activate effects that ask for a precisely timed guard.

activates after a precisely timed guard; a guard point is one way to produce that timing. reduces guard knockback and stamina use, which can preserve more follow-up options.

Counter Peak Performance is a one-Wirebug guard that fills the phials after a successful block. It does not charge the shield by itself. Because the block has already loaded the phials, use the result to charge the shield or enter the desired follow-up instead of using Charge Phials again. After a successful counter, you can morph, activate the saw, or use Axe: Amped Element Discharge or Axe: Ultra Element Discharge.

Ready Stance is a one-Wirebug guarded stance available in axe mode. After a guard or minor knockback, it can lead directly to Axe: Element Discharge II, letting you maintain Condensed Spinning Slash and loop Axe: Element Discharge II. Heavy knockback leaves you in sword mode; can reduce knockback and help preserve the axe-mode follow-up.

Air Dash is a one-Wirebug aerial axe attack that can end in a jumping slash or a phial explosion. Axe: Counter Morph Slash lengthens the guard point during the morph. A successful guard point strengthens the following Axe: Amped Element Discharge or Axe: Ultra Element Discharge. Sword: Condensed Element Slash is the alternative to Condensed Spinning Slash in its Switch Skill slot. It strengthens the sword while the shield is charged instead of activating the saw.

Condensed Spinning Slash and Ultra Discharge

Condensed Spinning Slash activates the saw. Hold the attack input as the axe connects to produce extra contacts. Aim those contacts at the best reachable sever hitzone. If the build uses , a raw hitzone of 45 or higher also activates that skill. An Ultra discharge is the committed alternative that consumes the loaded phials at once.

Axe: Ultra Element Discharge consumes every loaded phial and requires the charged shield. The monster must remain in the attack's path for its phial attacks to connect, so reserve it for an opening long enough to aim and recover. Axe: Amped Element Discharge is available without committing all loaded phials. After either discharge, read the monster again: return to sword mode when you need energy, or continue in axe mode when the current setup and opening allow it.

Axe Hopper costs one Wirebug and launches an aerial discharge: Axe Hopper → Axe: Amped Element Discharge or Axe: Ultra Element Discharge. Ready Stance, Counter Peak Performance, and Axe Hopper share the same Silkbind slot, so each scroll carries only one of them.

Switch Skills

Each scroll carries one choice for each Switch Skill slot. For a saw-focused scroll, equip Condensed Spinning Slash and Ready Stance.

Switch Skill Swap lets the second scroll carry Counter Peak Performance for a guarded phial fill, then return to Ready Stance for the axe-mode guard and Axe: Element Discharge II follow-up. This costs the time and positioning needed to swap, so use it when the monster gives you room.

Fight loop

Begin in sword mode, build the energy gauge, and store that energy in the phials before the sword overcharges. Spend loaded phials on the shield when you want stronger axe attacks, stronger guarding, or access to Axe: Ultra Element Discharge. Then rebuild the phials you plan to spend. When its scroll is active, use Counter Peak Performance to guard an incoming attack and fill the phials before choosing the shield charge, saw, or discharge follow-up.

On a saw-focused scroll, activate Condensed Spinning Slash and keep its extra contacts on the best reachable sever hitzone. Use Ready Stance when an incoming attack can be guarded without heavy knockback, then continue with Axe: Element Discharge II. If you expect heavy knockback, choose a normal guard, a guard point, or reposition rather than assuming Ready Stance will preserve axe mode.

On a discharge opening, first ask whether the monster will remain in the attack's path. Use Axe: Ultra Element Discharge only when the charged shield, loaded phials, aim, and recovery window are all available. Otherwise, continue the saw pressure or choose Axe: Amped Element Discharge.

The training target makes the targeting choice visible: Great Izuchi's head has a sever hitzone of 80, compared with 45 on its torso. Build and store sword energy, charge the shield, and practice holding the attack input so the saw's extra contacts stay on the head. During a real hunt, make the same choice with the best reachable part rather than chasing an unsafe target.

Skills

Choose skills according to which part of the weapon's loop you want to support. A saw-focused build cares about repeated weapon hits, affinity, and sharpness. A phial-focused build cares more about storing energy and strengthening its phial attacks. A hunter who intends to block through attacks also needs enough guard strength to keep the desired follow-up available.

Before adding damage, eat a meal and collect enough Spiribirds for the hunt. The equipped Petalace sets the limit of their stat increases. See Getting Started. Combat Mechanics explains and hitzones.

Build priorities

Build priorities
Resource or offenseWhy
Lv 2Stores all five phials from a yellow charge, shortening the sword phase before the shield or axe is ready.
Strengthens charge blade phial attacks. Favor it when phial attacks account for much of the opening.
Speeds form changes and raises morph-attack damage. An Ultra Element Discharge is a discharge, not a form change.
Lv 3Adds 50% affinity on raw hitzones of 45 or higher. Use the threshold to choose a target for the saw, not as a rule that every acceptable part must reach 45.
and adds affinity; increases critical-hit damage. Add only when the build produces critical hits often enough to use it.
Adds Attack and affinity while the monster is enraged. Its value therefore depends on how much of the hunt the monster spends enraged.
Sharpness managementThe saw makes repeated contacts, so decide how the build will maintain its useful sharpness color. Choose an option from Keep a color.
Build priorities
DefensiveWhy
Eat every huntRaises maximum health and stamina for the quest; Dango adds its own skills. Shield chip damage still reduces that health.
SpiribirdsRaise quest health up to the limit of the equipped Petalace.
Armor SphereRaises Defense at the smithy. Spend them on armor you expect to keep when hits start to hurt.
Reach 20 matching elemental resistancePrevents the corresponding blight. Use , , , , or as needed.
Reduces knockback and stamina depletion when a guard point, Ready Stance, or the shield blocks an attack. Reducing heavy knockback can preserve more follow-up choices.
Raises Attack after any precisely timed guard, including a guard point. Holding the shield before the timing window does not satisfy that condition.
Has a chance to reduce damage taken, including damage received while axe mode leaves you exposed.
Lv 3Prevents stun after attacks that get through your defense.

In a group, prevents allied attacks from causing damage reactions in either direction. It has no teammate interaction to solve in solo play.

Add the following skills only when their conditions match the build or hunt:

Build priorities
SkillWhy
Makes ordinarily unblockable attacks guardable. Take it for a matchup only when you plan to block such an attack.
Lv 4+Adds Attack; Lv 4 is the first level that also adds a percentage multiplier.
Lv 2 improves Wirefall recovery, while Lv 3 increases passive Wirebug recovery on the ground. Those effects support Counter Peak Performance, Axe Hopper, Ready Stance, and Wirefall only when Wirebug availability limits the plan.
Adds Attack only at full health, so shield chip damage suspends the benefit until that health is restored.
Adds affinity only after stamina has remained full for a period. Blocking and evading can make that condition unreliable.
Consecutive saw contacts can reach the skill's five-hit condition and build its temporary Attack and elemental bonuses.
Raises damage for a short time after you recover from a blight or abnormal status.
Adds affinity after its own condition is met. Unlike , it is not tied to the hitzone of the current attack.
After its gauge fills through repeated attacks, reduces damage and prevents the reaction from one attack that would knock you back.
Increases stun buildup only for attacks that already deal stun; it does not turn every saw contact into a stun attack.
Makes monster parts easier to break or sever. Use it when a part break is itself the goal.
Raises Attack and Defense after a faint, up to two activations where the quest permits it.

Keep a color

The saw's repeated weapon contacts consume sharpness. Pick an option whose trigger fits the hunt.

Keep a color
SkillWhat it does
Adds sharpness when the gauge is not already full.
Can prevent sharpness loss on critical hits, so its benefit rises with affinity.
Prevents sharpness loss for a fixed time after you sharpen.
Reduces sharpness consumption on average.
Provides a timed boost after sharpening recovers the required number of sharpness levels.
Shortens the whetstone animation, reducing the opening needed to restore sharpness.

Recovery and interruption protection

Recovery and interruption protection
SkillWhy
Increases the health restored when you heal after chip damage or a missed defense.
Shortens item-consumption time after you leave axe mode and sheathe the weapon.
The red portion of the health bar returns faster.
Adds Defense and, at higher levels, elemental resistance. Upgrade the armor itself with Armor Sphere as a separate step.
Prevents blights when the matching elemental resistance cannot reach 20.
Lets you survive one qualifying lethal attack. The next attack can still make you faint.
Prevents covered roars from interrupting Axe: Ultra Element Discharge or the saw.
Extends roll invulnerability. It does not extend guard-point timing.
Reduces stamina depletion from evading and guarding.
Sometimes lets you consume an item without removing it from the pouch.
Grants a random Spiribird effect at fixed intervals in quests where the skill applies.
While a large monster is enraged, its levels cover progressively stronger roars, wind pressure, and tremors.

Styles

Styles
StyleSkills
Ultra ImpactCombines and for repeated phial discharges. It still needs openings long enough for the attack to connect and recover.
Element phialUses the matching or water, thunder, ice, or dragon equivalent. Choose the element for the monster rather than treating one element as universal.
Element UltraBuilds the matching element for Ultra discharges. can convert Red Scroll elemental resistance into elemental attack; adds elemental resistance on that scroll, which explains the pairing when both skills fit the set.
Afflicted changes the Frenzy cycle and grants affinity after recovery. adds Attack and affinity only while the monster has poison, paralysis, or an elemental blight.

This hunt

These skills answer specific monster attacks or hunt goals. Add one only when its condition will occur.

This hunt
SkillWhen
Use it when you plan to block a normally unblockable attack. The available follow-up still depends on knockback.
Prevents tremors from interrupting Axe: Ultra Element Discharge or stopping the saw.
Prevents wind pressure from interrupting Axe: Ultra Element Discharge or stopping the saw.
Raises Attack while you are suffering from a blight or another abnormal status.
Raises the damage of explosive items, including barrel bombs used at a sleeping monster.
Draws more monster attention when you attack. Use it only when you want the monster to target you more often in a group.
Makes the Wyvern Riding gauge easier to fill and makes riding parries easier. An aerial attack from Axe Hopper does not by itself guarantee enough riding buildup to justify the skill.
Reduces or negates movement restrictions from monster muck and deep snow, depending on skill level.
Changes your interaction with hellfireblight after its conditions are met; take it only as part of a plan that uses that status.
At Lv 2, a precisely timed Switch Skill Swap negates the attack, performs a backward Swap Evade, and recovers Wirebug gauge.
While the monster targets you, raises Defense, extends evasion invulnerability, and reduces guard impact according to level.

A hunt can also make , , , , or more important for the matchup. Keep Dung Pods in the pouch when another monster's arrival would disrupt the planned opening.

Common skill mismatches

Settings

If automatic sheathe interrupts the weapon state you prepared, set automatic sheathe to Manual.

Before a long axe discharge, center the camera on the wound or head you mean to finish on. A camera left on the body after a morph often dumps the locked swing into a weaker zone than you planned.
